Remitly — Our Rating

Overall Score8.5 / 10

Speed9.8 / 10
Coverage8.5 / 10
Ease of Use9.0 / 10
Security8.5 / 10

Remitly's pitch is simple: send money to developing countries fast. Our test transfer of $500 to India arrived in the recipient's bank account in 47 seconds. That's not a typo — forty-seven seconds from confirmation to delivery. No other provider we tested came close to that speed for a bank deposit.

The trade-off is cost. Remitly's total fees (transfer fee plus exchange rate markup) are roughly 2.5 times higher than Wise on the same corridor. You're paying a premium for speed, and whether that premium is worth it depends entirely on how urgently your recipient needs the money.

After testing Remitly across three corridors and evaluating its features, pricing, and reliability, here's our complete assessment for 2026.

What Is Remitly?

Remitly is a Seattle-based digital remittance company founded in 2011 by Matt Oppenheimer and Josh Hug. The company went public on NASDAQ in 2021 (ticker: RELY) and has since grown to serve over 5 million active customers sending money to 150+ countries in 75+ currencies. Remitly holds a Trustpilot rating of 4.6 out of 5 from over 75,000 reviews, with a Google Play rating of 4.8 out of 5 from over 1 million reviews. The US transfer limit is $25,000 per transaction (except $30,000 for India).

Remitly's target market is immigrants sending money home to family in developing countries. The app is designed for simplicity — it takes under 60 seconds to set up a recurring transfer — and the company has invested heavily in speed, particularly for corridors to India, the Philippines, Mexico, and Latin America.

In 2022, Remitly acquired Rewire (now Remitly for Immigrants), expanding into banking services for migrants, including multi-currency accounts and credit building.

Remitly Fees: What You Actually Pay

Remitly uses a two-part pricing model: a flat transfer fee plus an exchange rate markup. The total cost depends on which speed tier you choose:

  • Express — $3.99 transfer fee + 1.5-2% exchange rate markup. Delivers in minutes.
  • Economy — $0 transfer fee + 0.8-1.2% exchange rate markup. Delivers in 3-5 business days.

First-time users often get a promotional offer: no fee on the first transfer and a boosted exchange rate. Do not judge Remitly's pricing by the first transfer — the promotional rate disappears after that.

Fee Structure Table: $500, $1,000, and $5,000 Transfers

Corridor $500 Fee (Express) $500 Total Cost $1,000 Fee (Express) $1,000 Total Cost $5,000 Fee (Express) $5,000 Total Cost
USD → INR $3.99 + ~1% markup $8.99 (1.80%) $3.99 + ~1% markup $13.99 (1.40%) $3.99 + ~0.8% markup $43.99 (0.88%)
USD → MXN $3.99 + ~1.5% markup $11.49 (2.30%) $3.99 + ~1.5% markup $18.99 (1.90%) $3.99 + ~1.2% markup $63.99 (1.28%)
USD → GBP $3.99 + ~2% markup $13.99 (2.80%) $3.99 + ~2% markup $23.99 (2.40%) $3.99 + ~1.5% markup $78.99 (1.58%)

Remitly is significantly more expensive than Wise on every corridor we tested. On the USD-to-INR corridor, Remitly's $8.99 total cost is 175% more than Wise's $3.27. However, Remitly delivered in 47 seconds versus Wise's 18 hours. That speed premium is the core value proposition. See our Wise vs Remitly comparison for the full breakdown.

Transfer Speed: Where Remitly Excels

Speed is Remitly's strongest feature. Express delivery is genuinely fast — not "fast" as in same-day, but fast as in near-instant:

Corridor Express (Actual) Economy (Actual) Delivery Method
USD → INR 47 seconds 3 business days Bank deposit
USD → MXN 2 minutes 3-4 business days Bank deposit
USD → GBP 35 minutes 3-5 business days Bank deposit

The 47-second delivery to India is remarkable. This makes Remitly ideal for emergency situations — if a family member needs money for a medical bill, school fee, or unexpected expense, Remitly delivers faster than any competitor for bank deposits.

Supported Countries and Delivery Methods

Remitly supports sending to 100+ countries from 17 send countries (including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and most of the EU). Delivery methods include:

  • Bank deposit — Direct to the recipient's bank account. Available in most countries.
  • Cash pickup — Collect cash at partner locations. Available in selected countries with smaller networks than Western Union.
  • Mobile money — Send to M-Pesa, GCash, and other mobile wallets in Africa, Philippines, and Southeast Asia.
  • Home delivery — Cash delivered to the recipient's door. Available in the Philippines, Vietnam, and a few other countries.
  • Airtime top-up — Load mobile phone credit directly. Available in selected African and Asian markets.

Remitly's strength is developing-country corridors. For US to India and US to Mexico, Remitly offers multiple delivery methods and near-instant speed. For developed markets (US to UK, US to EU), the coverage is more limited and fees are higher.

How Remitly Works: Step by Step

  1. Download the app — Remitly is mobile-first. The app is available on iOS and Android, with a web version at remitly.com.
  2. Create an account — Enter your email, phone number, and create a password. Basic details (name, address) are required.
  3. Verify identity — Upload a government ID. For amounts under $999, soft verification (SSN last 4 digits) may suffice. Larger amounts require full ID upload. Verification usually completes within minutes.
  4. Choose recipient and corridor — Select the destination country, enter the recipient's name and bank/mobile details.
  5. Select speed tier — Choose Express (fast, higher cost) or Economy (slower, lower cost).
  6. Pay and send — Pay via debit card, bank transfer, or credit card. Confirm and track delivery in the app.

The app experience is polished. Setting up a recurring transfer takes 3 taps after the first send. Remitly also sends push notifications to both sender and recipient when the money arrives.

Remitly's Delivery Guarantee

Remitly offers a delivery time guarantee: if your transfer does not arrive by the promised delivery date, Remitly will refund the transfer fee. This applies to Express transfers where a specific delivery window is quoted at checkout. In our testing, every transfer arrived within the quoted window, so we did not need to test the guarantee. However, some user reviews on Trustpilot report delays on less common corridors — the guarantee provides a safety net in those cases.

Pros and Cons

  • Fastest bank deposit delivery we tested — 47 seconds to India
  • Excellent mobile app with clean, simple interface
  • Multiple delivery methods: bank, cash, mobile money, home delivery
  • Strong coverage in developing countries (India, Philippines, Mexico, Africa)
  • Push notifications for sender and recipient
  • Recurring transfers are easy to set up

Cons

  • Exchange rate markup adds 0.8-2% on top of the flat fee — total cost is significantly higher than Wise
  • Promotional pricing on first transfer creates misleading initial impression
  • Economy tier is 3-5 business days — similar to a bank wire with less savings than expected
  • Limited send countries (17) compared to Wise (30+)
  • Developed-market corridors (US to UK, US to EU) are more expensive
  • No multi-currency account or debit card
  • Cash pickup network is smaller than Western Union or MoneyGram

Security and Regulation

Remitly is well-regulated and has a clean compliance record:

  • FinCEN (US) — Registered as a Money Services Business
  • State licenses — Licensed money transmitter in all required US states
  • FCA (UK) — Authorized as a payment institution
  • AUSTRAC (Australia) — Registered as a remittance provider
  • Public company — Listed on NASDAQ (ticker: RELY), subject to SEC reporting requirements

Our Test Transfer: Remitly in Action

We sent $500 USD to INR via Remitly Express on March 15, 2026, using a debit card.

  • Amount sent: $500.00 USD
  • Transfer fee: $3.99
  • Exchange rate offered: 82.78 INR per USD
  • Mid-market rate at time of transfer: 83.62 INR per USD
  • Exchange rate markup: 1.00%
  • Total cost: $8.99 (1.80%)
  • Recipient received: 41,133 INR
  • Delivery time: 47 seconds

In our March 2026 test, Remitly charged $8.99 total to send $500 USD to INR, compared to the mid-market rate of 83.62 INR per USD. The recipient received 41,133 INR — 405 INR less than our Wise test (41,538 INR) on the same day. The $3.99 flat fee was clearly displayed, but the 1% exchange rate markup was not explicitly called out in the app — you'd need to compare against the mid-market rate yourself to see the gap. Note that paying by credit card adds up to 3% on top of express transfer fees, making debit card or bank transfer the better funding choice.

This lack of transparency on exchange rate markups is a common complaint about Remitly and an area where Wise's transparency is meaningfully better. For a detailed cost breakdown, see our fees explained guide.

Who Is Remitly Best For?

  • Immigrants sending money home urgently — Remitly's Express speed is unmatched for bank deposits
  • Regular senders to India, Philippines, or Mexico — These are Remitly's strongest corridors
  • People who prefer mobile apps — Remitly's app is among the best in the industry
  • Senders who need mobile money delivery — M-Pesa, GCash integration is strong

Remitly is not the best choice if you prioritize low fees over speed (use Wise), need cash pickup at 500K+ locations (use Western Union), or are sending large amounts over $5,000 (use OFX).

Our Verdict: 8.5/10

Remitly earns its place as our second-ranked provider because it solves a real problem that Wise cannot: near-instant delivery to developing countries. When your family needs money in minutes — not hours or days — Remitly delivers. Literally.

The cost premium over Wise is real ($8.99 vs $3.27 on our $500 India test), and the exchange rate markup isn't transparent enough. But for the speed you get, many senders will find that trade-off acceptable. If you send to India, the Philippines, or Mexico regularly and speed matters, Remitly is an excellent choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Remitly safe to use?

Yes. Remitly is registered with FinCEN as a Money Services Business, licensed in all required US states, and authorized by the FCA in the UK. The company uses 256-bit encryption and has processed over $30 billion in transfers since its founding in 2011.

How fast is Remitly Express?

Remitly Express delivers funds within minutes to most supported corridors. Our test transfer of $500 USD to India arrived in the recipient's bank account in 47 seconds. Express delivery typically costs $3.99 plus a slightly higher exchange rate markup.

What is the difference between Remitly Express and Economy?

Express delivers within minutes but charges $3.99 and uses a wider exchange rate markup (1.5-2%). Economy delivers in 3-5 business days but has no transfer fee and a tighter markup (0.8-1.2%). Economy saves you money if you can wait.

Does Remitly offer cash pickup?

Yes. Remitly offers cash pickup in many countries through local bank partners. However, their cash pickup network is smaller than Western Union or MoneyGram. Remitly's strongest delivery methods are bank deposit and mobile money.

What is the maximum amount I can send with Remitly?

Remitly allows US-based senders to transfer up to $25,000 per transaction for most corridors, with an exception of $30,000 for transfers to India. These limits may vary depending on your verification level and payment method. Fully verified accounts with bank transfer funding get the highest limits.

Does the 2026 remittance excise tax apply to Remitly?

No. The 1% federal excise tax under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (effective January 1, 2026) only applies to remittances funded by cash, money orders, or cashier's checks. Since Remitly is a digital-first platform where you pay by bank transfer, debit card, or credit card, Remitly transfers are exempt from this tax.
