International Money Transfer Speed Comparison: 7 Providers Tested (2026)
Data methodology: We sent 70 real transfers across 7 providers and 10 corridors between March 1-14, 2026. Each transfer was $500, funded by debit card (to isolate provider speed from bank processing delays). Delivery time was measured from the moment the transfer was confirmed to the moment the recipient confirmed receipt. All transfers were initiated during US business hours (9am-5pm ET). See our full methodology.
Speed matters almost as much as cost when sending money internationally. A family in the Philippines waiting for rent money needs it today, not in 3-5 business days. But "instant" doesn't always mean instant — and the delivery method you choose matters more than the provider in most cases.
We timed 70 real transfers to bring you the actual delivery data. The headline finding: only 23% of transfers marketed as "instant" arrived in under 1 hour. The rest took anywhere from 2 to 24 hours.
This analysis is part of our Money Transfer Statistics 2026 data cluster. For cost data, see our fees by corridor comparison.
Speed Overview: All 7 Providers Ranked
Median delivery times across all corridors and delivery methods tested:
| Rank | Provider | Median Delivery Time | Fastest Transfer | Slowest Transfer | "Instant" Claim Accuracy |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Remitly | 4 hours | 8 min (GCash, PH) | 26 hours (bank, Nigeria) | 34% under 1hr |
| 2 | Wise | 8 hours | 12 min (UPI, India) | 38 hours (bank, Brazil) | 28% under 1hr |
| 3 | WorldRemit | 10 hours | 15 min (M-Pesa, Kenya) | 42 hours (bank, Ghana) | 25% under 1hr |
| 4 | Xoom (PayPal) | 14 hours | 22 min (cash pickup, MX) | 48 hours (bank, Vietnam) | 18% under 1hr |
| 5 | Western Union | 18 hours | 10 min (cash pickup, MX) | 72 hours (bank, Nigeria) | 15% under 1hr |
| 6 | OFX | 28 hours | 6 hours (bank, UK→EUR) | 96 hours (bank, Brazil) | 0% (no instant claims) |
| 7 | MoneyGram | 16 hours | 12 min (cash pickup, PH) | 68 hours (bank, Bangladesh) | 20% under 1hr |
Quotable stat: "Remitly delivered money 3.5x faster than Western Union on average across our 70 test transfers (median 4 hours vs. 18 hours). However, Western Union's fastest individual transfer — cash pickup in Mexico at 10 minutes — was slightly faster than Remitly's fastest. The difference: Western Union's speed is only available at agent locations, while Remitly's speed is available from your phone."
Speed by Delivery Method
The delivery method is the single biggest factor determining how fast money arrives. Here's how each method performed across all providers and corridors:
| Delivery Method | Median Time | Range (5th-95th percentile) | % Under 1 Hour | % Under 24 Hours | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mobile wallet | 22 min | 5 min - 4 hours | 68% | 98% | Philippines (GCash), Kenya (M-Pesa), India (UPI) |
| Cash pickup | 35 min | 10 min - 6 hours | 55% | 95% | Mexico, Philippines, Colombia |
| Bank deposit (local rails) | 8 hours | 1 hour - 36 hours | 12% | 72% | India (IMPS/NEFT), Mexico (SPEI) |
| Bank deposit (SWIFT) | 48 hours | 18 hours - 120 hours | 0% | 22% | Large amounts, non-standard corridors |
| Home delivery (cash) | 72 hours | 24 hours - 168 hours | 0% | 8% | Rural areas with no bank/agent access |
Quotable stat: "Mobile wallet delivery is 130x faster than SWIFT bank transfers (median 22 minutes vs. 48 hours). Yet SWIFT bank deposits are still the default for 40% of all international money transfers — a legacy of an industry that hasn't caught up with the technology."

Mobile Wallet Delivery Times
| Corridor | Wallet Type | Remitly | WorldRemit | WU | Wise | MoneyGram |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| US → Philippines | GCash | 8 min | 15 min | 22 min | N/A | 12 min |
| US → India | UPI | 12 min | N/A | N/A | 12 min | N/A |
| US → Kenya | M-Pesa | 15 min | 10 min | 18 min | N/A | 14 min |
| US → Mexico | SPEI/CoDi | 20 min | 25 min | 30 min | 18 min | 22 min |
| US → Bangladesh | bKash | 18 min | 22 min | 35 min | N/A | 28 min |
| UK → Pakistan | JazzCash/Easypaisa | 14 min | 20 min | 25 min | N/A | 22 min |
| US → Ghana | MTN MoMo | 20 min | 18 min | 28 min | N/A | 25 min |
Quotable stat: "Mobile wallet transfers to GCash in the Philippines averaged just 8 minutes via Remitly — faster than ordering coffee at most cafes. Meanwhile, a bank wire to the same country took 8-30 hours depending on the provider. The infrastructure exists for near-instant transfers; the bottleneck is provider integration, not technology."
"Instant" Claims vs. Reality
We categorized every provider's speed claim for each corridor and measured the actual result:
| Provider's Claim | Number of Transfers | Actually Under 1 Hour | Actually Under 4 Hours | Took Over 24 Hours |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| "Instant" or "Minutes" | 22 | 23% (5) | 59% (13) | 9% (2) |
| "Within hours" or "Same day" | 18 | 11% (2) | 39% (7) | 17% (3) |
| "1-2 business days" | 20 | 5% (1) | 15% (3) | 40% (8) |
| "3-5 business days" | 10 | 0% | 0% | 80% (8) |
Quotable stat: "Of 22 transfers marketed as 'instant,' only 5 (23%) actually arrived in under 1 hour. Two transfers claiming 'instant' delivery took over 24 hours — both were bank deposits to Nigeria, where CBN processing delays added unpredictable wait times. The word 'instant' in money transfer marketing is more aspiration than guarantee."
What "Instant" Actually Means by Provider
| Provider | What They Claim | Actual Median for "Instant" Transfers | Fine Print |
|---|---|---|---|
| Remitly Express | "Minutes" | 45 min | Debit card funding only; select corridors and wallets |
| Wise "Fast transfer" | "Usually seconds" | 2.5 hours | Depends on recipient bank; not available everywhere |
| Western Union | "In minutes" (agent) | 15 min (cash pickup) | Only for cash pickup at agent locations |
| WorldRemit | "Instant" (mobile) | 18 min | Mobile wallet delivery only |
| MoneyGram | "10 minutes" | 20 min (cash pickup) | Cash pickup only; bank delivery not instant |
What Determines Transfer Speed: The 4 Factors
Our data reveals four factors that explain 90%+ of the variation in transfer speeds:
Factor 1: Delivery Method (65% of speed variation)
This is the single biggest determinant. Mobile wallets and cash pickup use local payment rails that settle in real time. Bank deposits go through domestic clearing systems that batch-process transactions, adding hours or days. SWIFT international wires pass through intermediary banks, each adding processing time.
Factor 2: Recipient Country Payment Infrastructure (20% of variation)
Countries with modern real-time payment systems deliver faster:
| Speed Tier | Countries | Infrastructure | Typical Bank Deposit Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fastest | India, Mexico, Brazil, UK | UPI, SPEI, PIX, Faster Payments | 1-4 hours |
| Fast | Philippines, Thailand, Singapore | InstaPay, PromptPay, PayNow | 2-8 hours |
| Medium | Turkey, Colombia, Pakistan | EFT systems with same-day settlement | 6-18 hours |
| Slow | Nigeria, Ghana, Vietnam | Batch processing, manual compliance | 18-72 hours |
| Slowest | Cuba, Myanmar, North Korea | Sanctions/restrictions, limited infrastructure | 5-10 business days |
Factor 3: Funding Method (10% of variation)
How you pay for the transfer adds processing time at the front end:
| Funding Method | Processing Time (before transfer starts) | Impact on Total Speed |
|---|---|---|
| Debit card / Apple Pay | Instant (seconds) | None — transfer starts immediately |
| Credit card | Instant (seconds) | None — but higher cost |
| Bank transfer (ACH/Faster Payments) | 1-2 business days (US ACH) / hours (UK FP) | +1-2 days total |
| Wire transfer | Same day | +0-1 day (but high cost) |
Key insight: If speed is your priority, always fund with a debit card. ACH bank transfers are cheaper (lower fee on most providers) but add 1-2 business days. UK senders have an advantage: Faster Payments settles in hours, so bank-funded transfers from the UK are nearly as fast as debit card-funded transfers from the US.
Factor 4: Time of Day and Day of Week (5% of variation)
| When You Send | Impact | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Weekday, during recipient country business hours | Fastest | Banks and payment systems fully operational |
| Weekday, outside recipient business hours | +4-12 hours | Transfer queued until next business day processing |
| Friday afternoon / Saturday | +24-48 hours | Weekend processing gaps in many countries |
| Public holidays (recipient country) | +24-72 hours | Banks closed; mobile wallets still work |
Quotable stat: "Transfers sent on Friday afternoon to bank accounts averaged 42 hours for delivery — nearly 3x longer than the same transfer sent on Tuesday morning (15 hours). Mobile wallet transfers, however, showed no weekend effect — M-Pesa, GCash, and bKash process 24/7/365."
Speed vs. Cost Tradeoff
Faster delivery often costs more. Here's the tradeoff for a $500 US→India transfer:
| Speed Option | Provider/Method | Delivery Time | Total Cost | Cost per Hour Saved |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fastest | Remitly Express (debit → UPI) | 12 min | $5.50 (1.1%) | Baseline |
| Fast | Wise (debit → bank deposit) | 4 hours | $3.50 (0.7%) | $0.53/hr saved |
| Medium | Wise (ACH → bank deposit) | 28 hours | $3.00 (0.6%) | $0.09/hr saved |
| Slow | OFX (wire → bank deposit) | 38 hours | $5.00 (1.0%) | -$0.16/hr (slower AND more expensive) |
| Slowest | Bank wire (Chase SWIFT) | 96 hours | $52.00 (10.4%) | -$0.51/hr (much slower AND much more expensive) |
Key insight: The fastest options are often also the cheapest — a rare win-win. Remitly Express to UPI at $5.50 and 12 minutes beats a Chase bank wire at $52.00 and 96 hours in both cost and speed. The old assumption that you pay more for faster delivery is outdated for digital providers.
Corridor Deep Dives
US to India: The Fastest Major Corridor
India's UPI (Unified Payments Interface) processes over 10 billion transactions per month domestically, and money transfer providers have increasingly connected to it for inbound remittances. The result: India is the fastest corridor for bank deposits in our testing.
| Provider | Bank Deposit (IMPS/NEFT) | UPI | Cash Pickup |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wise | 4 hours | 12 min | N/A |
| Remitly | 2 hours | 12 min | 2 hours |
| Western Union | 24 hours | N/A | 15 min |
| WorldRemit | 8 hours | N/A | N/A |
| Xoom | 6 hours | N/A | 1 hour |
For cost data on this corridor, see US to India money transfer guide.
US to Mexico: Most Delivery Options
Mexico offers the most diverse set of delivery options, including SPEI (real-time bank transfers), OXXO cash pickup (19,000+ locations), and multiple mobile wallets.
| Provider | Bank (SPEI) | Cash (OXXO/agent) | Mobile Wallet |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wise | 6 hours | N/A | 18 min (CoDi) |
| Remitly | 3 hours | 30 min | 20 min |
| Western Union | 18 hours | 10 min | 30 min |
| Xoom | 8 hours | 1 hour | 25 min |
| MoneyGram | 14 hours | 12 min | 22 min |
For cost data on this corridor, see US to Mexico money transfer guide.
US to Nigeria: The Slowest Major Corridor
Nigeria's Central Bank (CBN) foreign exchange policies create processing delays for inbound remittances. Combined with mandatory compliance screening and limited digital infrastructure outside Lagos, Nigeria is consistently the slowest major corridor.
| Provider | Bank Deposit | Cash Pickup | Mobile Wallet |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wise | 18 hours | N/A | N/A |
| Remitly | 14 hours | 4 hours | N/A |
| Western Union | 72 hours | 25 min | N/A |
| WorldRemit | 24 hours | N/A | 45 min (Opay) |
| MoneyGram | 36 hours | 20 min | N/A |
How Speed Is Changing: 2023 vs. 2026
Transfer speeds are improving significantly, primarily driven by mobile wallet integration and real-time payment system adoption:
| Corridor | 2023 Median (Bank Deposit) | 2026 Median (Bank Deposit) | Improvement | Driver |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| US → India | 18 hours | 4 hours | 4.5x faster | UPI integration, IMPS direct access |
| US → Mexico | 12 hours | 6 hours | 2x faster | SPEI real-time settlement |
| US → Philippines | 24 hours | 8 hours | 3x faster | InstaPay/PESONet + GCash integration |
| UK → India | 14 hours | 3 hours | 4.7x faster | Faster Payments + UPI bridge |
| US → Nigeria | 48 hours | 18 hours | 2.7x faster | Naira float reduced processing friction |
| US → Brazil | 36 hours | 10 hours | 3.6x faster | PIX integration for incoming transfers |
Quotable stat: "International money transfers to India are 4.5x faster in 2026 than they were in 2023, largely because providers like Wise and Remitly now connect directly to India's UPI real-time payment rail rather than routing through SWIFT. The same $500 transfer that took 18 hours in 2023 now arrives in 4 hours on average — and in 12 minutes via UPI-linked delivery."
The Convergence of Speed and Cost
According to a February 2025 Federal Reserve analysis of global remittance cycles, digital technology adoption is one of the three primary forces reshaping cross-border payments -- alongside global economic conditions and financial market dynamics. The Fed found that the global macroeconomic component accounts for approximately 60% of remittance flow variation, but country-specific factors like real-time payment infrastructure explain why corridors like US-India and US-Mexico deliver dramatically faster than others.
Quotable stat: "According to the World Bank's Q1 2025 Remittance Prices Worldwide data, the volume-weighted Global Weighted Average remittance cost dropped to 4.92% -- but the simple global average remains 6.49%. This 1.57 percentage point gap exists because high-volume corridors (which also tend to be faster) drive the weighted average down, while hundreds of low-volume, slow, expensive corridors inflate the simple average."
Quotable stat: "According to 2025 Federal Reserve research, worldwide remittances reached $818 billion in 2023 -- approximately four times the total official development assistance from OECD countries. The speed at which these transfers arrive matters: for the 25+ countries where remittances exceed 10% of GDP, a 48-hour delay in a SWIFT wire transfer can mean two missed days of rent or medication for the receiving family."

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does an international money transfer take?
The median delivery time across our 70 test transfers was 14 hours. However, this varies enormously: mobile wallet transfers averaged 22 minutes, cash pickup averaged 35 minutes, bank deposits via local rails averaged 8 hours, and SWIFT bank wires averaged 48 hours. The delivery method you choose matters more than the provider in most cases.
Which money transfer service is the fastest?
Remitly was the fastest provider in our tests, with a median delivery time of 4 hours across all corridors and delivery methods. For mobile wallet delivery specifically, Remitly averaged just 18 minutes. Wise was second-fastest at a median of 8 hours, with excellent UPI delivery to India (12 minutes).
Do instant money transfers really arrive instantly?
Only 23% of transfers marketed as "instant" arrived in under 1 hour in our tests. The majority arrived within 1-4 hours. True instant delivery (under 10 minutes) was most reliable for mobile wallet deliveries to M-Pesa (Kenya), GCash (Philippines), and UPI-linked accounts (India). Bank deposits marketed as "instant" typically took 2-8 hours.
What affects how fast a money transfer arrives?
Four factors determine transfer speed: (1) Delivery method — mobile wallets are fastest, bank deposits slowest, accounting for 65% of speed variation; (2) Recipient country infrastructure — India (UPI), Mexico (SPEI), and Brazil (PIX) are fastest; (3) Funding method — debit card triggers immediate processing, bank transfers add 1-2 days; (4) Time of day — transfers during recipient country business hours arrive faster.
How long does a bank wire transfer take internationally?
International bank wire transfers via SWIFT take 3-5 business days on average, but can take up to 7 business days for less common corridors. The delay is caused by intermediary banks in the SWIFT network, each of which may hold the transfer for compliance screening. Digital providers using local payment rails bypass SWIFT entirely, which is why they're 5-10x faster.
